Affiliate Marketing Know-How

Affiliate marketing can be beneficial to both advertisers and affiliates. Advertisers can expand their marketing reach and affiliates can make extra money. This should be a win-win situation but everyone involved must work together or else the machines breaks down.

Affiliate Marketing for Affiliates

Before agreeing to become an affiliate, you should carefully decide if it's worth your time. All affiliate marketing programs aren't created equal, and some may be more beneficial than others. As an affiliate, your goal is to earn extra income for participating in the program.

Some questions to ask before joining an affiliate marketing program include:

  • How long has the program been in existence? If it's more than a year old, do a bit of research on the company to see how it operates. Are the affiliates treated well? Are they paid in a timely manner? A Google search can provide the answers you need.
  • Does the product or service lend itself to successful affiliate marketing? An obscure item with little or no market won't make you a lot of commissions. You can't make money from affiliate marketing if no one wants to buy the product or service you represent. Once again, do your research.
  • How much commission is paid per sale, lead, or click? As an affiliate, you will be expected to actively promote your sponsors, either by a link on your website, a banner, or some other means. Be sure the commission you make will be worth the effort.
  • Do you care enough about the product or service to represent it? If you become an affiliate for something you care nothing about, you will find it difficult to dedicate time to marketing and promotion. Choosing something that interests you will make your job easier.

Affiliate Marketing for Sponsors

In an affiliate marketing relationship between a business and an affiliate, the business is known as an "advertiser." The advertiser pays the affiliate each time a sale, lead, or click is gained from their efforts. The more successful affiliates in your network there are, the more money you stand to make. A successful affiliate marketing program can increase your bottom-line when managed correctly.

When starting an affiliate marketing program for your business, it's important to get educated on the subject. Even if you'll be using an affiliate marketing service, it's your responsibility to be knowledgeable on the subject. The time to learn about affiliate marketing is before you start a program, not after it's in progress.

Which form of affiliate marketing will you use? Pay per click, pay per lead, pay per sale, or all three? There is a lot to learn - probably more than you think. Luckily, there is an abundance of information written on affiliate marketing in books and on websites. So there's no excuse for being uninformed.

Remember an affiliate marketing program isn't a get rich quick scheme. It takes work and dedication to build a successful program. However, the potential payoff could be well worth the time and effort.
